Dr. Jose Fernandez - BA, MSAM, DC

Center Director

Dr. Fernandez received his Doctor of Chiropractic from the Columbia Institute of Chiropractic, now the New York College of Chiropractic, and his Masters in Science in Administrative Medicine and Public Health from Columbia University. Dr. Fernandez also graduated from Long Island University’s program in Nursing Home administration and is licensed as a nursing home administrator. Finally, he was selected by the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation to represent the municipal hospital system at Harvard School of Public Health’s Health Systems Management Program, from which he graduated.

In Dr. Fernandez’s 40 year career he has held increasingly responsible positions in a variety of health care management organizations. In New York, he opened the first Health Insurance Plan (HIP) ambulatory medical center and the municipal hospital system’s first major multidisciplinary Family Medical and Mental Health Center in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. From here he was recruited by the city of San Francisco to run yet again another major multi-service ambulatory care center serving over 150,000 patients a year. Returning to New York, he served as Associate Executive Director, then Chief Executive Director, of two major municipal hospitals of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. His last hospital, Greenpoint, was among the few fiscally sound in the Corporation, resulting in his being recognized and nominated to the Urban Academy’s Top 40 Program honoring the best and most promising city administrators. Dr. Fernandez has also held faculty appointments at New York’s Lehman College and at The New School for Social Research (now the New University) in their graduate School of Management and Urban Professions.. Because of his primary interest and expertise in ambulatory care, Dr. Fernandez left Health and Hospitals in 1984 to open two successful integrative medicine & holistic wellness centers in NYC, which today are managed by his children, also doctors. At this time integrative medicine was in it’s infancy, and he was a visionary and successful trail blazer for this new model of health care.

Dr. Fernandez has been coming to Cape Cod since the early seventies, and became a permanent resident in 2001. He continues to share and promote his interest in ambulatory care, integrative and holistic medicine, and improved access to health care. To this end, Dr. Fernandez has held a number of important positions including: President, Friends to the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission; Co-Chair, Patients and Family Advisory Council for Cape Cod Hospital; Vice Chair, May Institute’s Cove Club House; elected Member, Brewster Board of Health; and Member, Massachusetts Board of Registration and Licensure of Chiropractors. For this latter position, he was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick. Lastly, he is a 2010 graduate of the Cape’s Community Leadership Institute (CCI).
